4 Tips for Keeping Your Smile Happy & Bright This National Coffee Day
September 3, 2025

National coffee day is September 29th, and for many of us—especially those who enjoy a daily cup of joe—it’s a day worth celebrating! However, coffee is also known to come with a few downsides; it can cause dental staining, bad breath, and other types of oral health issues if you’re not careful. The good news is that you don’t have to give up your favorite beverage to protect your smile, and you can still partake in National Coffee Day if you know how to enjoy coffee the right way.
1. Drink Your Coffee Quickly
Sipping coffee for hours may seem cozy, or it might be required to get you through a busy workday. However, this habit means that your teeth are continually being exposed to acids and dark pigments, increasing the risk of issues like staining or cavities. Instead, try to enjoy your coffee in a half-hour session, and follow it up with a glass of water if possible.
2. Rinse or Brush Afterwards
You should brush your teeth after drinking your coffee, but wait at least half an hour or so since your enamel will be softened due to the coffee’s acidity. If brushing isn’t an option right away, a quick rinse with water can also help to wash away some of the stain-causing compounds and increase your mouth’s flow of saliva, helping to shield it from cavity-causing bacteria.
3. Choose Less Sugar
Flavored creamers, syrups, and added sugars not only add calories (and more flavor) to your drink but also increase the risk of cavities and decay as well as gum disease. Try cutting back on the sweeteners if possible or opt for a healthier alternative like low-sugar or low-calorie tea or black coffee.
4. Use a Straw
This might seem surprisingly simple, but using a straw—especially for chilled and iced coffees—can help significantly by limiting the amount of direct contact that the coffee has with your teeth. This, in turn, can minimize staining and help to protect your oral health.
This National Coffee Day, before taking that first sip of your morning java, don’t forget to think about your teeth! By following these simple tips, you can easily ensure your smile looks and feels great any time you enjoy coffee.
